#Cyberculture Telegram might not be good for some Iranian users… Selfies may be used by hackers…

http://ift.tt/2jB3TcM

If flashing a peace sign is your go-to selfie move, you might want to think about coming up with a new signature look. Turns out, your light-hearted display of goodwill to the world could be putting your personal data at risk — if you come across a truly determined hacker, anyway.

Watch How Casually False Claims are Published: New York Times and Nicholas Lemann Edition

Like most people, I’ve long known that factual falsehoods are routinely published in major media outlets. But as I’ve pointed out before, nothing makes you internalize just how often it really happens, how completely their editorial standards so often fail, like being personally involved in a story that receives substantial media coverage. I cannot count how many times I’ve read or heard claims from major media outlets about the Snowden story that I knew, from first-hand knowledge, were a total fabrication.

Why Trello, a Simple To-Do App, Is Worth $425 Million

Atlassian will pay nearly a half-billion dollars for the popular project management app Trello. It’s worth every penny.

It’s the end of an era: Yahoo as we know it is no more. While we already knew most of the venerable company was being sold to Verizon – a $4.8 billion purchase – the remainder of company today announced that it’s renaming itself to ‘Altaba,’ according to TechCrunch. Altaba.

Trello acquired by Atlassian for $425m

Project management app Trello has been acquired by Atlassian – the makers of the JIRA suite of services for software development teams – for $425 million.   The purchase will help Atlassian round out its portfolio of offerings that has predominantly been geared towards IT industry clients; Trello, with its Kanban-style boards and a flexible card-based interface can be used for managing all sorts of projects and teams – whether that’s gearing up to launch a new restaurant or planning a weekend potluck.

#Journalism agenda: “A Complete Guide: Facebook Journalism Project

Facebook Journalism Project: A Complete Guide

Facebook’s efforts to bolster its relationships with media and news organizations and journalists continued with Wednesday’s introduction of the Facebook Journalism Project.

Director of product Fidji Simo introduced Facebook Journalism Project in a Newsroom post, saying that the initiative has three objectives: collaborative development of news products for the social network, training and tools for journalists and training and tools for users.

Simo introduced Facebook Journalism Project as follows:

“You and all of us in this room, really, belong to the most vilified segments in American society right now,” Meryl Streep told the audience during her acceptance speech at the Golden Globe Awards on Sunday night.  “Think about it — Hollywood, foreigners, and the press.”

Donald Trump made CNN one of his favorite targets of media bashing during the election. At Wednesday’s press conference, he took the opportunity to express his rage at one reporter in particular: Jim Acosta.

The Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism’s annual predictions report, released Wednesday, starts out a little bleak and doesn’t exactly let up: In 2017, “key developments will center on fears about how changing technology is affecting the quality of information and the state of our democracy.”

‘Ethical journalism remains absolutely at the heart of building open and transparent democracies and that is clear everywhere we look, whether it’s Pakistan, Turkey, Europe or North America’

For all the easy talk of garbage fires and troll-infested swamps, most commenters who read and weigh in on news stories online appear to want company — from reporters and experts who can offer answers to factual questions. This is according to a large survey of readers across 20 U.S. news organizations, from print to broadcast to digital-only, produced jointly by the Engaging News Projectat the University of Texas and The Coral Project and published on Thursday.1(The survey received more than 12,000 responses.)

One of my new year’s resolutions has been to be better about personal finance, so I’ve been browsing a lot of Roth IRA explainers and looking into automated investing services (yay!). Now ad-supported websites I visit are consistently framed by a whole lot of never-seen-before ads concerning retirement, mutual funds, and brokerage services (eep!).

In the mean time, Cyprus peace talks: “all you need to know”

http://ift.tt/2in39u9

Cyprus peace talks – all you need to know

Rival leaders of the Mediterranean island, which has been split since 1974, are meeting in Geneva for a summit

The purpose of the Geneva talks is to end the partition of the island between the predominantly Turkish north and Greek south, so that the whole island has a unified – if federated – political structure and can be recognised by the European Union. At present only the south is recognised by the EU, and UN troops oversee a buffer zone across the island. Any agreement would have to be sanctioned by the UN and put to a referendum on both sides of the island, probably in the late spring.
