An unlucky couple in Antalya…

This couple in Antalya was detained briefly because they wore a t-shirt with a text “hero.” They stated that they don’t follow news that much. If they followed, they would have seen this:

Since this guy in the coup trial, “hero” t-shirt wearing citizens all over Turkey are assumed to be Gülenist suspects. Thanks to eager citizens, t-shirt wearing citizens are promply informed to police and they are detained- mostly briefly.
Thus, this cheap t-shirt, actually manufactured by Defact0– a pro-AKP textile company is now another “victim” of a growing paranoid mind…

Travel ban for academics in Turkey now eased….

Turkey Higher Education Council (YÖK) issued a statement on Friday afternoon declaring that it is up to university presidents to allow scholars to go abroad on academic purposes. Academic trips will be reported to YÖK every month. In fact, this is nothing new. I assume every university has a record of its scholars’ academic activities. We always ask permission for an academic trip so that our health insurance etc will be covered. Anyways, we got an official statement from the president’s office today so this effectively lifts the travel ban. Effectively, in the sense that, Bilgi University is keen on accountability, so as long as we provide our invitation letters, we will get the permission…

Because state of emergency is declared in Turkey, when we go abroad in addition to our passport and hardly gotten visas (!) we will have to provide a document from where we work etc.

In the mean time, since the ban was sort of uplifted in the last minute, I could not attend the EASA conference. I presented through Skype this morning. Thanks to  I have a photo from the presentation:

Can and should NATO learn from the EU?

When a group within the Turkish military attempted a coup to overthrow the current government under the leadership of Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and his Justice and Development Party (AKP) last Friday, the world knew that chaotic times will be ahead. This was however not the first coup d’état in Turkish history. While Erdoğan is now ‘able to do whatever he wants’ and working on restoring his power in Turkey, it would be interesting to see how the international community deals with the country. And even more striking would be to see and hear the reactions by the two organisations most important for Turkey, NATO and the EU. The lack of NATO’s responses and measures suggest that it may have to learn a lesson from its counterpart, the EU.
