Cyberculture agenda: Apple told to pay €13bn in back taxes to Ireland AND Deputy PM invites Apple to move int’l operations to Turkey (!)

http://ift.tt/1Q1i4Vv

Ireland offered Apple huge tax breaks, but didn’t give other companies the same deal. The European Commission concluded this was illegal and the companymust pay up the €13bn it would otherwise have owed in taxes.

Turkish Deputy Prime Minister Mehmet Şimşek has sent Apple an open invitation via Twitter to move its international operations to Turkey, in the wake of a European Union ruling ordering Ireland to collect a record amount in back taxes from the company

In our previous piece about a leaked European impact assessment on copyright, we described how the foreshadowed changes to European copyright law would place onerous new responsibilities on Internet platforms to scan your uploaded content on behalf of large entertainment companies. We also described how the changes would give news publishers a new, copyright-like veto power over the publications of snippets of text from news stories, even if these are merely by way of linking to the publisher’s website.

Facebook isn’t a great place to get your news. Yet millions of Americans use the social network to learn about what’s going on in the world every day.

WhatsApp’s plans to share user information—including phone numbers, contact lists, and usage data—with parent company Facebook threaten users’ privacy and control over their data. We describe details of this data sharing arrangement and the new privacy policy that makes it possible in a previous blog post.

WhatsApp is establishing data-sharing practices that signal a significant shift in its attitude toward privacy—though you wouldn’t know it from the privacy policy update that popped up on users’ screens last week. The new policy lays the groundwork for alarming data sharing between WhatsApp and its parent company Facebook. The update screen that users see, however, mentions only benign new features like WhatsApp calling, and requires a user to click a “Read more” link to see any mention of how the data sharing arrangement will work for users. Where WhatsApp could have offered users up-front information and choices, the UI as it stands buries critical details and options. If WhatsApp wants to merge user data with Facebook, it should give users opportunities to make choices about their privacy—starting with a clearer, more informative UI.

The omnipresence of porn is just as much about nudity and the well-endowed as it is technology. From chatbots to virtual reality, erotica drives innovation. This is hardly surprising. But what you may not know is how much pornography has aided in the evolution and creation of the most coveted innovations. In fact, much of the technology we enjoy today is because of porn. From the iPhone touchscreen to popping the cherry of VR, pornography laid the groundwork for some of today’s most important technologies. We’ve come a long ways from the writings of Pietro Arentino. When faced with the dilemma, Steve Jobs and Bill Gates both opted to drop out of college to pursue other passions – the former to work on Apple and the latter on Microsoft. Since then, this snippet of history has become a parable for success across the globe and probably the most cited example that you don’t need a college degree to achieve greatness. Similarly to Jobs and Gates, Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak didn’t finish his degree either – not the first time at least. After completing three years of college, Woz ditched school to work at Hewlett-Packard before eventually partnering up with Jobs to start Apple…

Cengiz Aktar: Nankör millî irade

http://ift.tt/1m1Gd0u

(…) AKP’nin seçimi kazanması mantıkla izah edilemez. Bunda rasyonel olmayan sebepler aramak gerekir.”

Eurosphere agenda: Refugee crisis growing daily…

http://ift.tt/1JzB2Ol

//platform.twitter.com/widgets.js

The Austrian police on Thursday discovered the bodies of more than 70 refugees in a truck abandoned on the hard shoulder of a motorway. Minister of the Interior Johanna Mikl-Leitner has said asylum seekers with a chance of being allowed to stay should be permitted to enter the EU legally. Such a move would deprive traffickers of their means of sustenance, commentators write in approval, and urge people to try and see things from the refugees’ perspective.

Migrant trains reach Munich station

Greece’s coastguard has rescued about 2,500 migrants and refugees off the country’s eastern islands over the past three days, authorities said yesterday (31 August), as the flow of people trying to cross into Europe continued unabated.

EU officials exposed in Ashley Madison hack

EXCLUSIVE: European Union officials used their work email addresses to register with online adultery site Ashley Madison, EurActiv can reveal.

Angela Merkel visited a refugee shelter in Heidenau on Wednesday, the first time she has made a such a visit. While there she condemned violence against those seeking asylum as “repulsive and a source of shame”. Shortly before the visit Berlin had suspended the Dublin agreement for Syrians, which means they will no longer be returned to the EU country in which they arrived. The German Chancellor has taken the lead in Europe’s refugee policy, some commentators write approvingly. Others wish that appreciation of politicians would extend beyond their commitment to refugees.
