“Attack is the best form of defense: “Turkey Sends Diplomatic Note to US Following Assault of Presidential Bodyguards…

http://ift.tt/2rOLhdt

In the wake of Presidential bodyguards assaulting protesters in the US, Turkey has sent diplomatic note to the US on the grounds that the police stopping the bodyguards “caused a security weakness”
After a fracas between Turkish bodyguards and protesters in Washington last week, tit-for-tat diplomatic complaints were made about who had mistreated whom.
Kanter, a center for the Oklahoma City Thunder, was stuck at a Bucharest airport for hours because Turkey had canceled his travel documents.

Ankara asks US to ‘conduct a full investigation’ after Erdoğan’s bodyguards were shown beating demonstrators outside the Turkish embassy in Washington

Turkey has summoned the American ambassador to complain about the behaviour of US security personnel during a US visit by Recep Tayyip Erdoğan that turned violent when Erdoğan’s diplomatic escort beat up protesters outside the Turkish diplomatic mission in Washington.

The violent scenes in the US capital were typical of Turkey, where anyone who criticizes the government is labeled a terrorist and treated with brutality

On 17 May, a slice of Erdoğan’s Turkey found its way to Washington DC. That day, a group of Kurdish Americans gathered outside the Turkish ambassador’s residence to protest against the Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. There, they were beaten, threatened and attacked by the Turkish leader’s bodyguards. A total of 11 people were injured. Instead of the attackers, two protesters were arrested.

Amnesty starts a campaign on Professional annihilation’ while “Turkey opens trial of suspected military coup plotters…

http://ift.tt/2rMcoqw

amnesty.org – May 22, 7:32 AM

The dismissal of more than 100,000 Turkish public sector workers is arbitrary and has had a catastrophic impact on their lives and livelihoods, a new report published by Amnesty International reveals. No end in sight: Purged public sector workers

Trial of 221 main suspects of July 15 coup bid begins amid heavy security and calls for death penalty.
Amnesty International on May 22 accused the Turkish government of implementing “arbitrary dismissals” of public sector workers since the July 15, 2016 coup attempt, widely believed to have been masterminded by the followers of U.S.-based Islamic preacher Fethullah Gülen.

It seems that State of emergency in Turkey becomes permanent…

http://ift.tt/2rHzVJl

The state of emergency declared in the wake of the July 2016 failed coup attempt will not be removed until peace is restored, President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan said on May 21.
The Turkish president said a state of emergency would continue until the country achieved “welfare and peace.”
President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has renewed nearly half of the Justice and Development Party’s (AKP) executive management to include members of the youth organizations and representatives from business circles during a congress in which he was re-elected as chairman.

A Turning Point in U.S-Turkish Relations?

While Turkish President Erdogan and U.S. President Trump emphasized the positive aspects of bilateral relations after their meeting, there remain points of contention. The stakes at this meeting and its outcome are high for both Turkey and the United States, and could mark a major milestone in the relationship.

#Cyberculture agenda: An Israeli judge decides emoji are proof of intent… “Chelsea Manning walks free from prison…

http://ift.tt/2q3yEem

Judge rules emoji are proof of intent

A landlord in Israel has successfully sued a couple who mislead him with emoji, with the judge ruling that the tiny pictures constituted a statement of intent. The landlord, Yaniv Dahan, posted an ad on a classified site for his home, and received a response from a couple. After giving him the impression they wanted to rent the house, he took down the ad — and then the couple stopped responding to his texts.

As my colleague Glenn Greenwald reports, Sweden’s top prosecutor, Marianne Ny, said on Friday that she has “discontinued” an investigation into allegations that Julian Assange, the founder of WikiLeaks, raped a woman in Stockholm in 2010, and withdrawn an international warrant for his arrest.

How Palestine Digitized It’s Public Diplomacy

In 2011, the U.S. State Department launched Virtual Embassy Iran, a web-based platform that aimed to promote American “values and culture” to Iranians. This embassy served as an example of how diplomats can use digital technologies to overcome the limitations of traditional diplomacy. Although the U.S. and Iran had no official diplomatic ties, the State Department was able to use the virtual embassy to narrate American foreign policy, promote a positive image of America amongst Iranians, and converse with Iranian citizens through dialogic communication.

Digitizing the EU’s Public Diplomacy in Israel

Introduction

The relationship between Israel and the European Union has been strained for some time. Indeed it is enough to review op-eds published in Israeli newspapers to sense the resentment Israelis hold towards Brussels. This is, in part, a result of three EU policies. The first is the EU’s ongoing critique against Israeli settlements and a proposed EU ban on importing any goods manufactured in Israeli settlements. This ban includes the labelling of Israeli products from settlements. The second policy is the EU’s funding of left-wing civil society organization who, under the current zeitgeist of nationalism, are seen as traitors to the cause of Israeli security. The third policy is the EU’s call for immediate negotiations with the Palestinians towards a two-state solution.

Britain’s opposition Labour Party will not walk away from Brexit talks without a deal if it wins next month’s election, according to a leaked draft manifesto published by several newspapers.
Europe’s police agency says a “complex international investigation” is needed to catch the culprits.

#Anthropology roundup: discussion: “towards a richer understanding of affordances…

http://ift.tt/2pGBZ6X

A comment on Elisabetta Costa “Social Media as Practices: an Ethnographic Critique of ‘Affordances’ and ‘Context Collapse’.” EASA Media Anthropology Network’s 60th e-Seminar, 9-23 May 2017

In order to capture the socio-technical scaffoldings that enable digitally networked communication and interaction, current scholarship typically resorts to the dubious though alluring notion of ‘affordances’. Usually, this choice of word comes with the idea that technologies make possible some activities while constraining others. As such, the notion is invoked in order to sidestep a technological determinism on the one side and a social determinism on the other.

Bronislaw Malinowski: Don’t Let The Cosplay Fool You

If there’s one picture that epitomizes White Guys Doing Research, it’s this one:

The canonical author of the canonical book, naked black people, white guy in white clothes being White  — for a lot of people, it’s totally crazy-making. But in many ways, Malinowski was far more more complicated than we given him credit for. There are many people who deserve more criticism for their role in colonialism than Malinowski (just wait for my blog post on Julian Steward). This is not to absolve Malinowski of whatever sins he committed. Rather, it’s just to ask that we remember what he actually did rather than project sins onto him.
