Paul Stoller’s Public Anthropology Turn
Huffington Post

Evidence that anthropology is taking a more public turn abounded at the annual conference of the AmericanAnthropological Association (AAA) in Denver last month. WesChester University’s Paul Stoller, a consistent presence on Huffington Post since 2010, …

Here is the call for papers for the best annual food studies conference in North America with the most confusing name. This is the annual joint meeting of theAssociation for the Study of Food and Society, the Agriculture, Food, and Human Values Society, and, just to confuse matters further this year, the Canadian Association for Food Studies. That makes it the ASFS/AFHVS/CAFS Annual Meeting, which is really fun to try and repeat to friends and colleagues. And to make matters even more fun, SAFN will be a sponsor this year (as we were last year).

Things are usually more creative on the margins, a notion that became evident during the recently concluded meetings of the American Anthropological Association (AAA) in Denver. The proposed AAA resolution to boycott Israeli academic institutions

Paying it Forward at AAA 2015

AAA member Ralph Bolton shared the following story on his Facebook page:

“One evening in Denver at the American Anthropological Association meeting a few days ago, I went out for a quick dinner at the Yard House. When I asked for the check, the waitress told me that someone had already paid it for me. I looked around and didn’t see anyone I knew. Puzzled, I asked her who had paid. She smiled and said it was Anonymous. So, thank you, Anonymous, for your generosity. On the way back to my hotel, I saw some homeless people camped out on the sidewalk, in freezing weather. I think that Anonymous’ kindness was meant for them. The man who received it, touched my hand, in silence. We are meant to pay things forward, every day.”

To this end, Cefkin employs all of the core tools of anthropology – individual and group interviews, charted observation, and codified ethnographic videography among them – in order to seek patterns that can be fed into the decision chains of our robot .

A Sixteen Year Old finds Encouragement and Inspiration at AAA 2015

Chandler Zausner, one of AAA’s youngest members, submitted the following post about his experience at the AAA Annual Meeting and how he caught the anthropology bug.

My name is Chandler Zausner and I am a student at the High School of Art and Design in New York City. I recently had the opportunity to serve as the youngest presenter at Familiar/Strange, the 114th AAA Annual Meeting in Denver. The subject of my abstract was Cosplay as Tribal Ritual: Transmedial Archetypes as Avatar and Shaman. I could not have accomplished it without the inspiration and encouragement of the anthropologists that I met when I attended the previous year’s AAA convention in Washington, D.C.
