More than 11,000 teachers have been suspended over suspected links to the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK), Turkey’s Education Ministry announced on Sept. 8
The government said it would take over the administrations of 28 municipalities using powers granted by a state of emergency after the failed military coup on July 15.
The Ministry of National Education on its Twitter account has said, “11,285 personnel linked to separatist terror organization [PKK] have been suspended”.
As many as 70 Education Union members have been detained following a police attack in Diyarbakır. Four members are in detention in Muş and the union has demanded their immediate release.
Prominent journalist Ahmet Altan and his brother, academic and columnist Mehmet Altan, were detained on Sept. 10 for questioning.
The administration of 28 local municipalities accused of supporting terror “will be taken over from the will of the PKK within 15 days,” Interior Minister Süleyman Soylu stated on Sept. 9.
Basri Aktepe, a former top officer of the National Intelligence Organization (MİT), was arrested on Sept. 7 in Ankara over having alleged links to Fethullah Gülen, the U.S.-based Islamist preacher who is accused by the Turkish government of masterminding the bloody coup attempt of July 15
