Man faces two years in prison for saying Turkey’s president looks like Gollum

A Turkish doctor is on trial for sharing a meme with side-by-side photos of the president of Turkey and Gollum. He is accused on insulting the president. The court has assembled a team of experts to determine whether or not the president resembles Gollum, a character from Lord of the Rings that J.R.R. Tolkien described as “a small, slimy creature.”

Director of Lord of the Rings trilogy Jackson and its script writers Walsh and Boyens have made a statement following Aydın court ruling to assign an expert witness for “Gollum is evil” probe in defamation case against President Erdoğan: “It is not Gollum but Smeagol in the photos”.

But ever since refugees from Syria, Iraq, and elsewhere started fleeing their homelands and crashing on Europe’s shores, with more than 200,000 refugees passing through Serbian territory this year, our countrymen have set an example for the rest of the continent, teaching our neighbors, even the larger and wealthier among them, a lesson not only in compassion but also in good policy.

It was a football game, a EURO qualifier, a game between Albania and its archrival, Serbia.
