Turkey and Russia rapprochement… Who knows until when and for what…

http://ift.tt/2aW3yxv

The leaders of Russia and Turkey patch up a damaging quarrel, pledging to restore close economic relations in St Petersburg.
Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said on Monday (8 August) that Ankara was ready to take steps towards the implementation of the Turkish Stream gas pipeline project.

Turkish president holds talks in St Petersburg with Russian counterpart, thanking him for support in wake of last month’s coup attempt

Vladimir Putin and Recep Tayyip Erdoğan held a clear-the-air summit in St Petersburg on Tuesday, the first time the pair have met since they fell out over the Russian fighter jet downed by the Turkish air force last November. After more than three hours of talks, the two leaders promised to return their economic relations to “pre-crisis” levels and attempt to put the bad blood of the past nine months behind them.

The Russian and Turkish presidents hold a press conference after a summit in St Petersburg on Tuesday, which marked their first meeting since a Russian fighter jet was shot down by the Turkish air force in November last year, straining relations between the countries. Both Vladimir Putin and Recep Tayyip Erdoğan agree that ties between the two countries must be strengthened to ‘pre-crisis levels’

Erdoğan is visiting Putin in Saint Petersburg today Tuesday in a bid to resolve several months of political crisis. “I believe the talks with my friend Vladimir will turn a new page in our relations,” the Turkish president said in advance of the meeting. There can be no talk of a new Moscow-Ankara axis, some commentators contend. For others the EU has driven Turkey into the Russian president’s arms.
One day before a crucial meeting with Russia’s Vladimir Putin in Saint Petersburg, Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan told France’s Le Monde newspaper that the migration deal with the EU might collapse if Brussels does not deliver its promise on visa waivers.

Putin and Erdogan Vow to Repair Ties as West Watches Nervously

The symbolism of a meeting in St. Petersburg between the Russian and Turkish presidents was probably enough to raise alarms in Western capitals.
Turkish President Erdoğan will make his first state visit since the attempted coup to Moscow on Tuesday. Some commentators ask if Ankara is shifting its allegiance from the West to Russia. Nevertheless the differences between the two countries must not be underestimated, others point out.

St Petersburg visit could lead to closer ties with Russia as Turkish president criticises west’s response to failed coup

Vladimir Putin and Recep Tayyip Erdoğan are due to meet face to face for the first time since the Turkish air force shot down a Russian plane last November. The incident led to a breakdown in relations between the countries and their leaders.

Erdogan to meet Putin for a ‘new beginning’
Turkey’s president Recep Tayyip Erdogan will meet on Tuesday (9 August) his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin aiming to open “a new page” in bilateral relations and reverse the damage sustained by sanctions imposed by Russia.
What a difference a few months can make.

Last November, a day after Turkish jets shot down a Russian Su-24 along the Syrian border, an angry Russian President Vladimir Putin lashed out, calling the incident “a stab in the back by the terrorists’ accomplices.”

The head of the National Intelligence Organization (MİT), Hakan Fidan, has accompanied President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan on a visit to St. Petersburg to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin

Once Foes Over Syria, Erdogan and Putin Look to Patch Things Up
The Turkish president, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, will visit his Russian counterpart, Vladimir V. Putin, on Tuesday to show mutual admiration and to discuss Syria and trade.
The United States is “concerned” by the rise of anti-American rhetoric in Turkey, especially over the controversy surrounding the extradition of the man accused of orchestrating the July 15 failed coup bid

Turkey’s Monday Syndrom: Several attacks, including the American consulate in İstanbul…

http://ift.tt/1KZ0nl8

A Turkish police officer has been captured in footage while taking down a female militant after she opened fire on the U.S. consulate building in Istanbul with another assailant.
A mine attack carried out by outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) militants in the southeastern province of Şırnak has killed four police officers, three days after an armed conflict between police and the youth wing of the PKK in the province
In Sultanbeyli district of İstanbul, policemen investigating the bombing attack carried out at night in front of the police station were opened fire in the morning. A police and two perpetrators died.
The İmralı committee, formed by members of the Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) to mediate the Kurdish peace talks, says the Justice and Development Party (AKP) has lost its credibility on the Kurdish peace process and no longer gives the committee permission to meet with Abdullah Öcalan, the imprisoned leader of the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK)
Despite its strong election win, the pro-Kurd HDP party may lose support as the government and PKK resume fighting.
Here is a round-up of Aug. 10 attacks in Istanbul and southeast Turkey, which left at least six Turkish security personnel dead. The terror attacks came after Ankara’s operations against the outlawed PKK, the DHKP-C and ISIL
An armed attack was carried out against the U.S. Consulate in Sarıyer district of İstanbul. A perpetrator was captured.
Local residents who protested the construction of a 2,600-kilometer road project planned to connect upland areas in eight provinces in the Black Sea region have been comprehensively searched with trained dogs by gendarmerie forces in Rize province while heading to a local festival
Even as Kurds are assisting in the campaign against the Islamic State in Syria, Turkey, a latecomer to the U.S.-led mission, is also bombarding Kurdish insurgent positions.
