#PUB204 this semester (II). What have I done in my most experimental course, Digital Cultures (#PUB204)
In a previous PUB204 class, we have created a fictive Web TV channel…
I was hoping to write earlier. Weeks passed after the first part and I lost track a little bit.
Anyways, the course used to have a heavy social media base but I did intend to change outcomes towards digital media productions, not necessarily social media based. I have noted 4 projects previously. Students who were around 150 worked in 4 major groups. I should note that class size was still a burden despite the help from two dear research assistants, Anıl Sayan and Vehbi Görgülü. Next, I should think about a smaller class size. However, despite all, I believe we have reached a satisfying level of success.
A group students worked with a SUNY (State University of New York) Broome class headed by Regina Eckert. This was a COIL project. The result was a reference a wiki site on the 4th Crusade that ended up conquering Constantinople by Crusaders.
Our second and most ambitious project was to create a mobile app inspired by Swarm. We will have it ready for beta-testing by September. A well-known dietitian Dilara Koçak will be our sponsor!
Our third project was to create a digital archive for Gezi Protests. The project is open-ended and needs more editing and contributions but here is what we have so far: The Gezi Archive You are more than welcome to contribute.

Chilcot Report: Tony Blair Told George W. Bush, “If We Win Quickly, Everyone Will Be Our Friend.”
The Chilcot Report, the U.K.’s official inquiry into its participation in the Iraq War, has finally been released after seven years of investigation.
Its executive summary certainly makes former Prime Minister Tony Blair, who led the British push for war, look terrible. According to the report, Blair made statements about Iraq’s nonexistent chemical, biological, and nuclear programs based on “what Mr. Blair believed” rather than the intelligence he had been given. The U.K. went to war despite the fact that “diplomatic options had not been exhausted.” Blair was warned by British intelligence that terrorism would “increase in the event of war, reflecting intensified anti-US/anti-Western sentiment in the Muslim world, including among Muslim communities in the West.”
Prior to the UK’s EU membership referendum, a pro-Brexit activist named William Oliver Healey set up a petition on the Parliamentary petition site (which guarantees that the government will “respond” to any petition with more than 100,000 signatures) calling for the referendum to be re-run if the outcome was closer than 60%:40% or if voter turnout was less than 75%
Eleven years ago today, three suicide bombers attacked the London subway and a bus and killed 51 people. Almost immediately, it was obvious that retaliation for Britain’s invasion and destruction of Iraq was a major motive for the attackers.

Eurosphere agenda: Grexit seems to have been avoided
After 17 hours of talks the Euro Group leaders reached a compromise with Athens on Monday morning. The dispute between the proponents and detractors of a Grexit had flared openly on the weekend. Some commentators see a growing rift between France and Germany after the talks. Others voice hopes that the EU will emerge strengthened from an agreement in this protracted dispute.
Economist Joseph Stiglitz says Europe needs to keep supporting Greece.
Prominent economist and Nobel laureate Joseph Stiglitz accused Germany on Sunday (12 July) of displaying a “lack of solidarity” with debt-laden Greece that has badly undermined Europe.
What is striking about the Greek crisis is the way in which the creditors and the European Commission and many politicians especially in Germany are hardwired to equate reforms with austerity.
Eurozone leaders have reached a “unanimous” agreement after marathon talks over a third bailout for Greece, EU chairman Donald Tusk says.

Why Greece eyes France as last hope
Asylum seekers, refugees and poor EU citizens are vulnerable to labour exploitation in EU member states. Sicily’s agricultural sector illuminates how structural gaps and individual needs exacerbate that vulnerability.
While the European immigration crisis is not showing any signs of dying down, the EU has been taking some much needed measures related to saving the lives of the people who are trying to enter Europe trough the Mediterranean. Aside from the Mediterranean Sea, migrants have also been fleeing their home countries by way of the now familiar ‘Balkan Route’, traveling from Kosovo and war-torn Middle Eastern countries. One of the key entrance points to European grounds is the route from non-EU Serbia into neighboring EU member Hungary. Hence, to keep immigrants out of the European Union, the Hungarian PM is planning on erecting a 4-meter-high, 175-kilometer-long fence along the border with Serbia.
