http://ift.tt/28NgCqN

What if? Security consequences of Brexit and Trident renewal

If David Cameron survives the result of the EU referendum, he may try to rush Parliament into a vote on Trident renewal in July. What is at stake for Britain’s security?

In this week’s episode, we speak to The Times, The Economist, The Conversation and FullFact about their political coverage in the run up to the EU referendum on June 23
The possibility of Turkish membership, however remote, has injected issues of race, religion and tolerance into campaigns leading up to the June 23 vote on whether to stay in the bloc.

One day after a British lawmaker, Jo Cox, was assassinated by a constituent with a history of mental illness and support for white nationalist groups, who reportedly shouted “Britain First!” during the attack, the leaders of a fringe political party with that slogan for its name tried to dissociate themselves from the suspect by spreading misinformation about the accounts of eyewitnesses.

Thomas Mair, the terrorist who murdered a UK member of Parliament last week while shouting “Britain First” (the name of a UK neofascist party), was arraigned yesterday; in the dock, he refused to state his name, shouting “Death to traitors, freedom for Britain” instead

Jamala, Eurovision, and Human Rights

[Savage Minds welcomes guest blogger Greta Uehling]

Many Savage Minds readers will be aware of the victory of Jamala at the 2016 Eurovision Song Contest. As part of my current project, I have been following the work of this Crimean Tatar singer, composer, and actor closely, and was among those who greeted her at the Kyiv airport when she returned with her trophy.

Anti-austerity forces and the digital media in Spain

The experiences of the 15-M and Podemos in Spain demonstrate that by participating in both the traditional mass media and the digital media, we can develop counter-powers at a local, national and international level.

Spain’s disposable workers a hot election issue

The economic recovery is proving fragile for jobseekers in Spain, and has become a hot issue for voters, who are preparing to go to the polls for the second time, on 26 June, since an indecisive election was held in December last year.

Facebook’s pro-#Brexit bias

Bernd Hüttemann earlier pointed out to me that the mood section of the Facebook app for iOS has a mood “in favour of leaving the EU” but none in favour of remain. I scarcely believed it! But now I have checked and it is true. I am using an iPhone 6S, with the latest version of the Facebook app (57.0), on iOS 9.3.2. Screenshots were taken at 1530 CET, 14th June 2016.

Journalism agenda: In 2016 Mobile continues its takeover…

http://ift.tt/28LA6fd

The State of the News Media 2016: Mobile continues its takeover

Facebook, Snapchat, and other social platforms have dominated conversations around journalism over the past year. While publishers have flocked to tools like Facebook Live, Instant Articles, and Snapchat Discover to reach new audiences, they’ve also worried about changing revenue models and the threats platforms pose to their businesses.

The full report is here.

Twenty-eight per cent of 18-24 year-olds surveyed said social media is their main source of news, surpassing television for the first time
Ireland’s largest media group has improved its business with a platform-neutral newsroom and new production techniques

Trust has always been central to journalism and news organisations – without trust, why would audiences pay for a newspaper?

Of all media, print has been hit hardest by the online revolution, and with its demise has come a steady erosion of trust among audiences in the news they consume.

Tumblr, misunderstood by its owner Yahoo, a trove for BuzzFeed, and the once-safe haven of weird teens all over the world, is opening up to live video.

Tumblr itself has been quiet about the development, save for several Tumblr posts at livevideo.tumblr.com (first noticed by David Chartier and later reported on by TechCrunch). On Tuesday, it posted a formal update, announcing that by the end of the day users will be able to broadcast live “directly into your followers’ dashboards.” There’s no mention, of course, of Twitter’s Periscope, or of Facebook Live, where many are already live broadcasting.

In the early hours of June 12, a gunman opened fire on an LGBTI+ nightclub in Orlando, Florida, killing at least 49 people and leaving another 53 injured. The performers that night were trans latinx women. This wasn’t an isolated incident.

The same day, a trans woman was shot in Pakistan. Another shooting of a trans woman occurred in Pakistan on May 22. She was shot eight times and denied treatment in hospital until she died four days later. Back in the US, a trans man was savagely beaten in Vermont on the same day. He died a week later. On May 13, a trans woman was beaten in Brooklyn. On April 28, a trans woman wasphysically and verbally attacked on a train in New York.

Publishers are urged to focus on their audience’s ‘user experience’, as WAN-IFRA’s latest annual report shows audiences continue to contribute to the majority of daily revenues for news media companies

A Facebook executive said Tuesday that she expects the social platform will probably be “all video” in five years.

Videos are now viewed 8 billion times daily on Facebook, up from 1 billion a year ago, Nicola Mendelsohn, Facebook’s vice president for Europe, the Middle East, and Africa, said at a Fortune conference in London.

One of the hallmarks of Jeff Bezos’s Washington Post ownership is the broad spirit of experimentation that has taken over the company. The Post over the past few years has operated essentially as a startup, rapidly building and iterating new products even if there’s a strong chance they will fail.

Sponsored content has come to Facebook Instant Articles: This week, The Washington Post and The Atlantic both launched branded campaigns there. Facebook had announced support for sponsored content in Instant Articles back in April, and on Friday the company announced additional editing options so publishers can “visually distinguish branded content from editorial content.”

Erkan on his way to Global Media Forum #GMF15

http://ift.tt/1H1oLSZ

Global Media Forum

Global Media Forum

Deutsche Welles’s Global Media Forum, content-wise, is one of the best conferences I see, starts tomorrow.  I liked it so much that I pay for myself to attend it this year. Hopefully, I will be writing about it.

Before reaching Bonn, I stopped by Vienna. That’s why I did not post much here. Just chilling out. A city of museums and cafes. A little bit artificial but still lovely. By artificial, I feel like all the city is a museum.

While I am on the road, blogging might be at a pause but not my social media accounts: Twitter, Instagram and Foursquare
