Carb-loading for the autumn ahead
France’s President François Hollande and Germany’s Chancellor Angela Merkel will discuss quotas for accepting migrants at their meeting today (24 August), French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius said yesterday.
Following the thwarted attack on a French train on Friday evening, the authorities are assuming radical Islamic motives on the part of the alleged perpetrator. Belgium’s prime minister has demanded changes in the Schengen regulations. Some commentators argue that Europe’s open borders make planning terrorist attacks easier. Others emphasise that Europe will only be able to fight terror on the basis of a common security policy.
The German Bundestag approved a third bailout package for Athens on Wednesday. The parliaments in Spain, Austria, Estonia and the Netherlands have also given it the green light this week. Some commentators see the move as proof of the resilience of European solidarity. For others, Europe has missed the chance to reshape its future.
For the first time, the far-right Sweden Democrats are the biggest party in Sweden. According to a Yougov poll commisioned by Metro, the extremists would receive 25.2% of the vote if there was an election today, ahead of the governing centre-left Social Democrats, at 23.4%.
The ‘humanitarianism’ of military control, detention, and deportation, will not solve the refugee crisis facing Europe. Substantial changes in thought and practice are desperately needed.
