Authorities seize control of Zaman as part of crackdown on supporters of influential anti-Erdoğan cleric
Turkish authorities have seized control of the country’s largest newspaper in a widening crackdown against supporters of the US-based Muslim cleric Fethullah Gulen, an influential foe of the president, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.
A trustee panel has been appointed to a media group considered to be linked to U.S.-based Islamic scholar Fethullah Gülen, who the Turkish president accuses of heading a “terrorist organization” aiming to topple the government
The 6th Istanbul Criminal Court of Peace ruled to appoint a trustee panel to the Zaman media group on March 4, following a request by the Istanbul Prosecutors’ Office within the framework of a probe against the an “Fethullahist Terror Organization” (FETÖ)
The Turkish president is known for his tough talk, but he apparently cannot abide criticism.
The move highlighted President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s campaign against opposition journalists and the followers of Fethullah Gulen, a cleric.
