President Obama just effectively freed Chelsea Manning from the 32 remaining years in her jail sentence, according to the New York Times. While it’s not a presidential pardon, the commutation of Manning’s sentence will see her go free in just five months.
President Obama commuted whistleblower Chelsea Manning’s remaining prison sentence. She will go free on May 17 of this year as opposed to 2045, the duration of her full sentence. From the New York Times:

Wikipedia will turn 15 years old tomorrow. The free online collaborative encyclopedia has grown explosively: from fewer than 500,000 English-language articles in 2005 to more than 5 million in 2015. And as the site has grown, so have the edits to its pages.

Arizona starts using Facebook and Twitter to publicly shame ‘Deadbeat Dads’
Fathers in Arizona who aren’t delivering court-ordered child support payments may discover their mugs plastered all over social media soon. Arizona governor Doug Ducey this week unveiled a bizarre new name-and-shame campaign to publicly mock so-called “deadbeat dads,” a crackdown on “the worst of the worst” parents who fail to make child support payments.
Researchers at Kaspersky Lab have, for the first time, discovered a valuable zero-day exploit after intentionally going on the hunt for it.
One study discovered that 53 percent of these Twitter users polled considered themselves early adopters — twice as many as non-users.
It’s no surprise that the most popular action taken by users of Facebook’sMessenger application is sending messages, but what else are they doing with the app?
According to GlobalWebIndex, the most popular actions by Messenger users are:
- Sent a message, 90 percent
- Sent a photo, 48 percent
- Sent a sticker, 35 percent
- Used Messenger.com on a PC or laptop, 22 percent
- Sent a video, 21 percent
- Made a video call, 18 percent
- Sent a voice recording, 15 percent
- Received a message from a brand or company, 15 percent
After being hounded out of other social networks, ISIS has created its own secure messaging app on Android, according to the Ghost Security Group (GhostSec). The Alwari app, says GhostSec is being used by members of the terrorist group to communicate with each other. The security watchdog discovered, “encrypted communications features although rudimentary to Telegram or other[s],” according to emails received by Defense One. ISIS has been finding it difficult to use social networks such as Telegram and WhatsApp after groups such as Anonymous have been actively trying to disrupt what they get up to online. Predicting the year ahead in journalism has become a Nieman Lab tradition. Each year, we ask some of the smartest people in the business to share what they think the year ahead will look like for news.
We’re not the only ones looking at how journalism will fare in 2016, though. This week, Nic Newman, a research associate at the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism, released a new report: “Media, Journalism and Technology Predictions 2016.”
In December, U.S. media publishers accounted for 1.5 billion total social actions (likes, comments, shares, retweets, dislikes), with 728 million from Instagram, 667 million actions from Facebook, 52 million from Twitter, and 17 million from YouTube (excluding views).
The media publishing industry represents 22 percent of all actions taken on content published by U.S. brands in December. Total actions for the media publishing industry grew 6 percent compared to November 2015, due to a 6 percent increase on Instagram and Facebook, a 3 percent increase on Twitter and a 29 percent increase on YouTube.
On my Instagram feed, sandwiched between a photo of a bagel and one of a friend’s Christmas tree, is a black-and-white snapshot of a homeless man sitting on a Manhattan sidewalk. The accompanying text is 400 words long, a sketch built from fragments of the man’s history as told to the post’s author (and photographer), Jamie Alliotts.
Newspaper companies haven’t had an easy 2015, and the outlook for regional and local news in 2016 is less than rosy. Last year, on the heels of shakeups at the national newspaper chain Digital First Media, Ken Doctor asked whether these companies have a strategy beyond milking their papers for profit.
