Turkish PM rejects a re-launch of PKK peace process but…

Prime Minister Binali Yıldırım has dismissed expectations for the re-launch of a peace process to resolve Turkey’s Kurdish question, but he has signaled moves to put ties with Syria and Egypt back on track

Turkey and the US still take very different positions on the fighting Kurdish forces in Syria.
There is no diminishment in the security relations between the United States and Turkey, U.S. President Barack Obama has said, commenting on the growing rift between Turkey and the U.S. especially over the latest developments in northern Syria
A contentious dam project that dates back to the 1950s is more than 80 percent complete, and the filling of a reservoir will swamp much of the town of Hasankeyf.
President Erdoğan, speaking about the Jarablus operation and the YPG, has said: “They now tell us that they [YPG] have withdrawn to the East of Euphrates. We say, ‘No, they have not’. The confirmation that they have passed to the East of Euphrates depends on our assessment”.
A number of military officers who had already been arrested over the bloody coup attempt of July 15 have also been subject to an investigation over the illegal recording of a secret March 2014 meeting on Syria in the office of then-Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu, which was leaked to the media and triggered a major scandal, ranking security sources have told the Hürriyet Daily News.

This old lady is arrested because her son-in-law could not be found:(

There are increasing number of arrests or firings not much related to the coup attempt… like the Ergenekon trial that was gradually derailed, anti-coup trials seem to have already derailed…

Mother-in-law of prime coup attempt suspect Adil Öksüz arrested

The mother-in-law of one of the prime suspects wanted for his alleged role in the July 15 coup attempt, has been arrested, while the whereabouts of Adil Öksüz himself, referred to as the Gülen movement’s “imam of the Air Force,” are still unknown
More than 33,000 prisoners were released as of Sept. 1, Turkish Justice Minister Bekir Bozdag has said, as the government looks to free up space in prison for suspects embroiled in the failed coup attempt case
Speaking at the “First Hundred Days of the 65th Government” meeting in the Çankaya Mansion, Prime Minister Yıldırım presented the Government’s activities. The Minister of Justice Bozdağ said at the meeting that 33,838 convicts have been released.

The arrest of over 100 journalists and exile of others is a clear crackdown on criticism of the president. What has happened to my beloved Turkey? The long wait, filled with anxiety, is at last over. Very early on Tuesday morning, I was woken up by another alarming ring on my phone; it is part of the routine these days as the ordeal continues for journalists in Turkey. It was a text message from the doorman of my apartment block in Istanbul. “Mr Yavuz, police entered your flat a short while ago with the help of a locksmith. They did not damage or take anything during the search. Told us about an arrest warrant for you.”

More than 150 Turkish exchange students in foreign countries have been expelled from their schools following new state of emergency decree laws published in the Official Gazette late on Sept. 1

#tarih ‏@tarihdergi Eylül sayısı: “Bir gün herkes göçmen olabilir”

http://ift.tt/1QaU4gy

Ekran Resmi 2015-09-02 11.36.31

  • Günümüzde Yunanistan’a gitmek zorunda kalan Suriyelinin büyük dedesi, 1920’lerde Yunanistan’ı terk etmek zorunda kalanları kendi ülkesinde ağırlamıştı.
AYRICA #tarih dergisi bu sayısında okurlarına Nazım Hikmet’in 54 (55?) yılında Budapeşte Radyosu’nda yaptığı programda seslendirdiği şiirlerden 15’inin ilk kez yayınlanan kaydını CD formatında armağan ediyor.
  • Ayrıca “Albüm” bölümümüzde yine Nazım Hikmet’i konuk ediyoruz. Bu kez küçük yeğeni Murat Germen’in Nazım Hikmet Kültür ve Sanat Araştırmaları Merkezi’ne bağışladığı, bazıları ilk kez yayımlanan fotoğraflarla…

Eurosphere agenda: “Merkel says refugee crisis tests Europe’s core ideals…

http://ift.tt/1FkWFhy

German chancellor puts pressure on European countries who refuse to take in refugees, saying it betrays EU’s values.

France: Hungary refugee fence not even fit for animals

Paris slams Hungary, gateway to EU from eastern Europe, for erecting 175km fence to stop refugees as new talks called.

Migration, climate and security: the choice

The forces driving people’s movement into Europe were already apparent in a near forgotten incident of 1991.

In August 1991, with the world’s media dominated by the chronic instability in Russia and the aftermath of the violent eviction of the Iraqi army from Kuwait earlier that year, a sequence of events in the Adriatic Sea provides an uncanny foretaste of the current surge of desperate people across the Mediterranean from north Africa, as well as overland from Syria through Turkey, Greece and beyond.

Net immigration into Germany last year hit its highest level since 1992, the Statistics Office said on Thursday (3 September), with expectations that figure will rise this year to 800,000.

Refugee-child-jordan

When looking at the sheer number of refugees around the world, it’s easy to become disillusioned.

The image of a drowned little boy who was washed up on a beach on Turkey’s Bodrum Peninsula was spread on the social media on Wednesday. The boy and at least ten other people drowned while trying to reach the Greek island of Kosby boat. The photo is a brutal testimony to the failure of the EU in the refugee crisis, some journalists write. Others hold Turkey partially responsible for the child’s death.

Hungarian police have opened the international railway station in Budapest to migrants who have been camped outside since Tuesday.

Refugee crisis: Pressure piles on David Cameron to do more

Hungary11

LONDON — Britain’s prime minister David Cameron found himself under increasing pressure Thursday to do more about about the growing refugee crisis, as some newspapers published front-page photographs of a drowned child found washed up on a beach in Turkey.

Shocking images of drowned Syrian boy show tragic plight of refugees

Young boy found lying face-down on a beach near Turkish resort of Bodrum was one of at least 12 Syrians who drowned attempting to reach Greece

• Warning: this article contains images that readers may find distressing

The full horror of the human tragedy unfolding on the shores of Europe was brought home on Wednesday as images of the lifeless body of a young boy – one of at least 12 Syrians who drowned attempting to reach the Greek island of Kos – encapsulated the extraordinary risks refugees are taking to reach the west.

Photos showing the dead body of a child washing ashore infuriated the Turkish public and caused many to ask how come so many boats sink so frequently on a usually calm sea, the Aegean

Europe’s refugee crisis: bridges, not fences, are the answer

The inability of the European Union to agree a meaningful response to the current migrant crisis is not only disgraceful, it risks defining the Union’s legacy as a spectacular failure.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel on Aug. 31 said the refugee crisis facing Europe is testing the core ideals of universal rights at the heart of the European Union

Top American companies no longer see Germany as an attractive investment and the country is losing jobs as a result. “Germany attracts attention, but it’s no longer attractive to investors,” said AmCham Vice-President Frank Riemensperger. EurActiv Germany reports.

Hungary’s border fence – intended to keep out refugees arriving from Serbia – was completed on Sunday according to government sources. The fence is nothing but a domestic policy manoeuvre by Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, some commentators write. Others believe that Hungary is above all harming its own interests with its policy of seclusion.
