Only Edward Snowden Can Save James Bond

James Bond is doomed. But his undoing will not come from the Special Executive for Counterintelligence, Terrorism, Revenge and Extortion, or Ernst Stavro Blofeld, or a jilted Bond girl.

Bond is doomed because early in the movie Spectre, the otherwise benevolent Q, muttering something about nanotechnology and microchips, injects him with “smart blood.”

In a dramatic departure, Google is open sourcing software that sits at the heart of its online empire.

Machine learning – systems to make computers work more like human brains – are behind some of Google’s best new products, including Google Now, Smart Reply in Inbox, and the crazy-good search in Google Photos (most of the time anyway).

Betting site aggregator suggests likely win for Hillary in 2016

chances

Election Betting Odds tallies not polls but gambling odds, to figure out who people think will win the 2016 U.S. presidential election. Democrat Hillary Clinton is the predictable favorite, but interestingly, bettors don’t think much of ostensible Republican front-runner Donald Trump, preferring Mark Rubio. Carson, high-polling among conservatives but fast-becoming an object of humor for everyone else, is way down the list. [via internet is beautiful]

A few days ago, we notified you of a file dump that purported to show the names of KKK members outed by a group aligning themselves with Anonymous. In response, Anonymous promised it would release its findings today — and it has. A Twitter account for Operation KKK posted a link to a Pastebin account with the names of roughly 1,000 individuals the group believes are members of the Ku Klux Klan. Facebook addressed skepticism about the accuracy of its monthly active user figures by changing the way it defines MAUs.

The social network said in an email to SocialTimes that it “wanted to provide a cleaner metric,” so starting with its third-quarter-2015 earnings report, it no longer counts what it called “third-party pings,” or people who did not access Facebook itself, but shared content or activity via Facebook Login-integrated websites or applications.

By now we’ve all heard about Australian Instagram star Essena O’Neill and how she is quitting Instagram and decrying the pressure that social media puts on individuals to present their lives as unnaturally perfect. In all the hoopla over O’Neill’s departure from social, other more important news may have been lost: Socality Barbie has quit Instagram. I know, I’m heartbroken too.
