The whole Syrian affair deserves to be defined as a “crime against humanity.” The “intervention in Iraq” was another one, even if the chief conspirators, George W. Bush and Tony Blair, were able to get away with it given that they were the leaders of two powerful countries.
The Venice Commission, an advisory body at the human rights watchdog Council of Europe, says Turkey is abusing state of emergency laws in its wider efforts to purge so-called state saboteurs after the failed mid-July coup. It said the government is casting too wide a net over people linked to the Fethullah Gulen movement, which Ankara blames for the coup attempt. The full opinion will be published Monday December 12.

A Greek appeals court in Athens, on Thursday, ruled to allow two Turkish officers to stay in Greece following extradition requests from Ankara. The officers are wanted by the Turkish authorities over allegations they were involved in July’s coup attempt. Eight Turkish officers fled to Greece and demanded asylum in the wake of the coup, three have so far been returned.
